Ways to Include Your Child’s Birth Family During the Holidays
The holidays are a wonderful time that family and friends gather to celebrate. It is a time filled with activities, school programs, parties and get togethers. Although this can be a busy time for many, it is important to also remember your child’s birth family. We have a few tips on how to include and honor your child's birth family during this holiday season.
1. Send a Holiday Card: It is common to send and receive holiday cards from family and friends. Be sure to include your child’s birth family when sending your family card or photo.
2. Send a Gift: There are many gift ideas (see our blog post titled, “Gift Ideas for Birth Parents”) but don’t forget a simple, yet meaningful homemade gift. A small gift of your child’s handprint or footprint would be thoughtful, and shows your child’s current growth and stage!
3. Schedule a Visit: Depending on your relationship, this can include a phone or FaceTime call, facilitated through your agency/attorney or yourself, if you have direct communication. If you have an open adoption, this would be a wonderful time to schedule a face to face visit!
4. Incorporate a New Family Tradition: Ask your child’s birth family what holiday tradition they do, and plan to do the same tradition with your child. Take photos and send those to your birth family. This is a fun and thoughtful way to remember and include your birth family.
5. Honor Them: You may not have communication with your child’s birth family, per their request. If this is the case, you can still honor them during the holidays. Talk with your child about how grateful you are for their birth family’s adoption choice. Include an ornament celebrating your child’s adoption day and discuss the birth family’s loving choice, making that day possible.
It is important to include your child’s birth family during the holidays. Hopefully, these few ideas helped to spark the conversation about ways that you can include and honor them this holiday season!
